Philippians 2:4 (CEB) Instead of each person watching out for their
own good, watch out for what is better for others.
The novel, The Great Gatsby opens with these lines: “In my
younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been
turning over in my mind ever since. ‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’
he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the
advantages that you’ve had.’”
That’s good advice for all of us. Some people haven’t had the advantages of
parental love and guidance; others lacked educational opportunities, others
medical care and good nutrition and still others lacked the advantage of being
introduced to Jesus Christ and the Way of life that leads to real life. Besides loving and worshipping God, as
Christians we are asked to help those without these advantages as we are able. As
I sat at The Drip coffeehouse yesterday with my chair of missions other well
known community figures drifted through. Our discussions with each revolved
around ways to better the city of Hapeville and to help its citizens in need. From nutritional education, to helping a
stroke victim to painting the homes of the needy just this handful of coffee
drinkers had the ideas and resources to do this. Pulling together, churches and community we
can do so much more.
Holy God, We ask your
blessings today on all of our mission efforts.
Help us to bring hope to those who have not had the advantages that we
have had. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Blessings,
Paige
