Proverbs 16:9 (MSG) We plan the way we want to live, but
only God makes us able to live it.
Like many I am sad to hear of the death of Glee star Cory
Monteith from a drug overdose. Yesterday
his friend and acting coach gave an interview to GMA. I captured this quote for
you: “The disease of addiction makes you think you are driving the car and then
it slowly moves you to the passenger seat and it starts to drive.” I know my thinking is sometimes out of the
box but I immediately saw an association with life in general. Many people have
no addiction to drugs, tobacco or alcohol but they are fooled to think they are
in control of their lives. They live in the moment not realizing that all their
decisions affect external forces that will come to bear upon their situation. They
see themselves as self sufficient and don’t realize their need for God. God
warned His people about this type of thinking in Deuteronomy 8:17-18. “Do not
say to yourself, ‘My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this
wealth.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to
get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your
ancestors, as he is doing today.” The
best and most joyful life is the one in which God is both acknowledged and
implored to be the guide. Is there something beside God that is slowly taking
control of your life and moving you to the passenger seat?
Loving God, we confess this morning that we often take
credit for our success without giving you the praise for your provision. Enable us to live in a way that is joyful to
us and pleasing to you. We pray this in Jesus’
name. Amen.
Happy Friday!
