Monday’s Devotion: A Habit of Excellence

Ecclesiastes 9:10  Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

I used to have a friend who would call and ask, “Are you working hard, or hardly working?”  If I was at work, I’d reply,” working hard.” My previous careers in data processing and accounting were precision and deadline driven.  It adds a layer of intensity that many other jobs do not, although most work has standards of performance.  With that training and my belief that anything that’s worth doing is worth doing well, I admit that I hold high standards for my work and for those who work with me.  I still have a somewhat deadline driven profession.  It’s Monday but I know Sunday’s coming!  And every weekday I have a devotion to produce.  I say all this because while we will apply ourselves diligently to our earthly work, we sometimes fail to apply ourselves with the same effort to our relationships with our spouses, family members, friends, and with God.  We let things roll with the punches or put the burden of effort upon them.  We don’t know what heaven will be like but the writer of Ecclesiastes says to do your best now because this is the only earthly life we’ll have. It is only now that we have a chance to excel. Let’s make the most of each day!

God you have created us and giving us work to do as we care for your creation, ourselves and one another.  Give us strength each day to forge ahead with those tasks. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Have a blessed day,
Paige
