Friday’s Devotion – A New Word from God

Psalm 8:1-4  O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.  You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.  When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?

As I watched the morning news I started thinking of my TV as a box.  This box contains people doing all sorts of things.  It is a marvel if you think about it.  Really smart people make it happen.  When I opened my laptop there again was a magic box. It can do even more than the TV.  It just chimed to remind me to remind me of a phone call I need to make in 15 minutes.  At the same time my iPhone sitting on the table beside me flashed the text reminder for that call.  Another magic box that does so much.  It takes a lot of people to control all that happens with these devices and although most of us don’t understand the technology we know that it is something under the control of those who do.  The problem as I see it is that we begin to put God in a box.  That we create our own vision of who and what God is.  We think for God and assume that God thinks like us.  We keep God in the past assuming that God has not changed his opinions of anything. Even in the bible we have examples of God changing his mind.  The nature of God is unchanging but that doesn’t mean God doesn’t have new thoughts or opinions. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach us all we need to know.  That is because God knew the world would change and we would need new words to address new ways of life – not bad ways of life – just so very different than the ancient cultures of biblical times. The Bible is our guide but we also need to be open to God for a new word in this new world.  Let’s not put God in a box.

Holy God, help us to look to you for a new word each day.  Give us wisdom and discernment.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Have a good weekend,
Paige
