Friday’s Devotion – New York or San Diego?

Matthew 13:20-21 (NLT)  The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy.  But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.

We stayed home at night on the 4th. While it would have been fun to go watch the fireworks somewhere, Joe’s getting up time of 4AM makes it difficult for him to stay up very late.  So I watched the fireworks on TV from DC, New York and Boston. I wondered at the cost of those fireworks that seemed to go on forever. Then yesterday morning newscasters reported that all the San Diego fireworks unexpectedly went off at one time. The show was over in 15 seconds!  When people first come be believers they are often very excited and enthusiastic.  But if not nurtured and encouraged they can be more San Diego than New York. Let’s encourage Christians who are growing in their faith so that they can grow deep roots.   One way we can do this is to encourage church members, especially new ones to become involved and integrated into the life of the church.
Loving God, help our faith to be deep and sustained, not shallow and tenuous. Guide and bless us each day that we may be good examples to others, too.  We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Have a great weekend!
Paige
