1 Timothy 6:6-10 But
godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we
can take nothing out of it. But if we
have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into
temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge
people into ruin and destruction. For
the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money,
have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
I watched several episodes of Antiques Roadshow last
night. Some people brought items that
turned out to be worth a lot of money, while others brought items that proved
to be fakes, reproductions or just of little
value. One woman had a painting that she said would continue to be passed down
through her family. It was valued at
$150,000. I wonder how long it will
remain in the family! For many the true
value lay in the story behind it; who it had belonged to and how it had been
obtained. Paul’s letter to Timothy warns him not to put his faith in monetary
wealth but to cultivate godly traits. Some items we obtain may decline in value
over time; some may have little value on the open market no matter how much we like
it. A godly life however will never
decline in value and is a treasure to be pursued.
Blessed
Father, help us to see the true value in life. For those who think they have
nothing, show them the real treasures available to them. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
