Wednesday’s Musings: Be Ready!

Matthew 25:13 (NLT)  “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.

Sunday my sermon was on the parable of the ten bridesmaids who were on watch for the bridegroom to welcome him into the wedding banquet.  Five were foolish and did not bring enough oil for their lamps and when the bridegroom was delayed they found themselves without enough oil.  The parable concludes with the above verse. 
The point is we must stay prepared.  Jesus says no one, only the Father knows the day or hour of his second coming.  Still we are most likely to go to Jesus in heaven before Jesus returns here.  And even with that we must be ready because we really don’t know when that might happen.  Monday we attended the funeral of an acquaintance who had just recently turned 43.  It was a tremendously sad time for his sweet wife, little girls, family and all who knew him.  Our consolation is that we know he was ready to face Jesus.  He had lived a wonderful Christian life.  We must be ready, too.  Don’t go to bed with unspoken apologies.  Be ready; know if you leave earth today that you made a positive mark on the lives of others.  Be ready; know that you have not just head belief in Jesus (which alone won’t get you into heaven) but you have a heart faith and have lived as a disciple.  Are you ready?

Heavenly Father, help us to grow in our faith so that when the time comes for us to stand before Your throne that we will be ready.  We ask in the name of our savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Friday's Musings: Rethinking the Cross


Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Galatians 6:14  But as for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything except for the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through him, and I have been crucified to the world.

 Yesterday morning as I put on a red leather wrap bracelet I admired the jeweled infinity symbol clasp.  It made me think of God's infinite, yes never ending love.  I thought that this symbol instead of the cross might be a better sign for Christians to use. But then something or someone reminded me that God's love is not just a touchy feely love. God's infinite love is a love willing to make tremendous sacrifice for us; even the death of his own Son on the cross.  We use the symbol of the cross to help us remember not just the length but also the depth of God's love.

Loving God, help us to never forget the cross even when we long for a symbol that is less remindful of the pain suffered by our Lord Jesus.  Help us to have a good weekend and to share your love with others. Amen.

Thursday's Musings: Where We Carry Things

Matthew 11:28 NLT  Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

The other day I saw a photo on TV of a younger picture of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  He was really stylin’ with a black turtleneck, gold chain and …….a fanny pack!  He had his thumb hooked onto said fanny pack to show how cool he was. I don’t know why we call them fanny packs since people usually carry them in front.  I have one that I used to take to the annual elementary school December craft show.  The place was always so crowded that I didn’t want a purse that would be knocking into people. I’ve used it when hiking in the mountains because I don’t like leaving my wallet in the car.  Now Joe has a hiker’s backpack.  When I was in seminary I carried a backpack for my books and instead of a purse. Whether we carry our stuff on our tummy, on our arm, in our hands or on our back we can easily put them down when we want.  It’s not so easy when we are carrying the burden of troubles.  Maybe we are heavy-hearted, have the weight of the world on our shoulders or have a knot in our stomach.  When we can’t seem to put them down Jesus says, “Give them to me.”  Jesus, who carried a cross knowing it would be the instrument of his impending death can certainly carry whatever load we give to him.

Thank you, Lord Jesus for offering freedom from burdens and rest in you. We ask that you help us turn our troubles over to you, trusting in your loving care.  In your name we pray. Amen.

Prayer request:  Please pray for my friend and fellow pastor Allyson Lawrence and her little girls and the Lawrence family.  Her sweet husband Kevin who was only 43 died of a heart attack early yesterday evening.

Wednesday’s Musings: Finding Contentment USED

There were so many scriptures returned this morning when I did a search on God’s provision that I found it difficult to choose only one.  Alfred Nobel said, “Contentment is the only real wealth.”  A great number of people devote much time seeking happiness but we know there is a difference between being happy and being content.  To be content means to be satisfied over all with life.  Happiness is temporary; it comes and goes with mood and situation.  I believe one can be content without being happy all the time but it is much more difficult to be happy without being content. What helps me be more content?  My trust in God and God’s provision.  To seek first the kingdom of God because influences my priorities. This helps us eliminate the desires for things beyond our reach and the dissatisfaction we feel when we can’t have these things.

Prayer from 2 Corinthians 9:8-11  Loving God, you have the power to provide us with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, we’ll have everything we need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work. As it is written, “He scattered everywhere; he gave to the needy; his righteousness remains forever.”  We know that you who supply seed for planting and bread for eating will supply and multiply our seed and will increase our crop, which is righteousness. Then we will be made rich in every way so that we can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to you God for all of your provision. Amen.

Tuesday’s Musings: Yearning to watch GNN

Luke 8:1  After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.

Buying a new home usually involves getting utilities either changed over into your name or newly installed.  When we arrived in NC this past Friday we had no cell phone service, television or internet.  That meant for me no Facebook, no calling my friends, no email, no Google and no TV. I suffered major withdrawal!  It was very rainy and we had to stay at the house to wait on the cable and internet installers. The side benefit was that there  was no bad news to hear. No shootings, no tragic wrecks or weather or plane crashes; no war stories and no political mudslinging.  Yeah!  I thought how nice it would be to start GNN – the Good News Network.  Jesus had one, maybe we should ask for one, too. I’d like one that just had stories of human triumph and generosity and great things going on in communities around the world.  In the meantime we can have our own personal GNN by sharing the joy of Christ and our faith with others.

Loving God, The newscasts we watch to stay informed are filled with so much sadness and evildoings.  Help us to find good news to balance out those things that cause our hearts to be heavy.  Bring good news into our lives each day that we in turn may share with others.  Amen.

Monday’s Musings: Under Wraps

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

Joe and I and a number of folk from church went to McDonough yesterday to visitation after the death of another church member’s sister. On the way back to Hapeville I noticed two flatbed trucks carrying large loads that were wrapped in heavy black plastic.  I wonder what they were transporting under wraps.  Then I thought about how we describe things we keep to ourselves as being “under wraps.”  Are you tired and troubled?  God will bring you among people who care. Are you happy in your faith? God wants you to share that with others.  I’ve never noticed this morning’s beautiful verse until today when I searched the scriptures for sharing.  I’m imagining groups of Christians coming together in faith and friendship, caring for and supporting one another and then going out to share Christ with the world.  To me that is the Kingdom of God on the earth.

Loving God, thank you for Jesus who taught us about the Kingdom.  May our lives this week reflect your love for us.  In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Luke 10:41-42 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things. One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part. It won’t be taken away from her.” 

I sometimes use the Shuffle feature for my iPhone playlists when I’m walking.  I did that the other day and enjoyed the music as it jumped randomly from one song to another.  I suddenly thought how much that reminded me of my brain at times and immediately recalled this scripture.  I want to be Mary and sit still and learn from Jesus but often I’m more like Martha, scurrying about with a hundred things on my mind.  Let’s remember Psalms 46:10-11. “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Lord, when we get too busy for our own good, help us to slow down and be still and remember that you, our God will provide for us all that is necessary.  In Jesus name, amen.

Wednesday's Musings: An Immediate Answer to Prayer USED

1 John 5:14-15  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Yesterday I had a discussion with my assistant Randy about my prayer times.  I said often when I pray and ask God for direction the answers don’t come right away.  They usually come when I am walking or doing some mindless task that doesn’t require concentration.  Today I was blessed to be able to take a long walk and to sit in the park for awhile.  I pondered something I heard on a news program.  It was a follow-up to the story of a stalker getting into Sandra Bullock’s home. He had notes saying that they were married and her child was his.  He was obviously deranged.  The analyst said that social media has led many to feel a familiarity with celebrities that goes beyond what it should. 

I then thought about our relationship with God.  I wondered if we have become too familiar with God; if we don’t think of him as some benevolent being in the sky. I thought about scriptures that say God brought fear (awe) and trembling to those in his presence.  Is God our friend? How will it feel to stand before his throne in the heavens?  How would I react if I could sit now at Jesus’ feet?  I prayed some favorite lines from the Psalms then decided to read some more on my iPhone NIV app.  To my surprise when I opened it, Ephesians 3 beginning with verse 14 immediately appeared. It is a wonderful prayer by Paul for the Ephesians.  Then I scrolled up to the beginning of the chapter and found my answer in verse 12.  “In him (Christ) and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.”  Praise be to God for listening to my question and providing the perfect answer.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,  and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  Amen.

Monday’s Musings: On Seeds and Stars

Luke 8:5-8   “A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.  Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it.  Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold.”

Yesterday I preached on this parable of the sower and it provoked a lot of follow-up conversations.  The concept that grabbed me the most was not about all the different types of soil on which most folk focus. What I took away was the fact that the sower (God) didn’t just carefully spread his seed (God’s Word) on the fertile patches of ground. Instead he flung the seed everywhere on all types of soil. No soil (person) no matter how poor was denied the chance to receive the seed.  The Church collectively and individually should take a cue from this.  No one should be denied the right to worship and we should not just share the Gospel with those whom we feel would be the most receptive.  God generously flung the stars across the universe. Let us generously spread his Word in the same way.

Friday's Musings: A Very Special Message

There are times when we glimpse the extraordinary in the ordinary. Sometimes sitting in the backyard is more profound than standing on a mountaintop.





 I know Atticus well.

It’s a product of twelve years together, starting when he was eight weeks old. But more importantly, it has to do with our partnership in hiking far more than a thousand mountains together, sometimes in extreme conditions. In the mountains, up high and far away from home and everyone you’ve ever known, when the temperature soars to unbearable reaches or the cold comes at you at forty below zero wind chill, or the snow is blinding and you are stuck in unexpected blizzard conditions halfway through a twenty-four mile a hike, you reach new levels of knowing and trusting.

Trust is everything. We had that from the beginning, but it was strengthened in the mountains.
Hiking is an intimate partnership. Strangers become fast friends. True friends become even truer. And when man and woman meet on the trails, well, let’s just say these mountains host as many affairs as the hotels in Boston do on any given day. So while I don’t pretend to know everything Atticus is thinking, I feel comfortable in knowing what he wants most of the time, what makes him happy, what fulfills him, what he dislikes. And it’s not just the silent human and dog bond, it’s the connection between two hiking partners who have grown in the mountains together.

With Will, I’m still getting to know him. I do my best to put myself in his position and try to figure him out that way. I do not know much about his past. What I do know is how scarred and scared he was when he came to us. How angry and lacking trust he was. I saw the rot in his mouth from lack of care, the hips that had been imprisoned in a crate for far too long, the willingness to bite and draw blood. Somewhere along the way Will had been betrayed. He’d grown old and was not taken care of.

I’m told there’s a difference between neglect and abuse, but I don’t see one. Neglect is just another form of abuse, whether it is from ignorance and arrogance. Our job is to care for others in our lives, and if we can’t do that, the least we can do is not hurt them. I catalogued these observations in my head over the first few months Will came to live with us. It was my job to put myself in his place, to figure out how to help him, if I could, and figure out if he wanted to be helped. The rest was up to him. With Atticus it’s easy. We’ve always been together and more often than not, I just know. With Will, I don’t presume to know much. Still, we did the usual things – the supplements and drugs for hips and pain, dental work, a wholesome diet, healthy grooming habits, protecting him from himself and the outside world. But that was only the beginning.

We all have a story to tell and after those initial steps, Will started to reveal his own. I don’t pay much attention to the past or to why things happened as they did in his life. I rarely think about the people he used to live with, nor do I completely condemn them for I don’t know their whole story. What I have been concerned with from the beginning is how Will is any given day.

I decided to leave behind his past, and concentrate on his present and the future. As a man who grew up with abuse, I understand that the best way to live is to concentrate on the next step….on the now and the places you’re going. Yes, we can learn from the past, but we can also be made prisoner by it. So we took what we could from Will’s past and then dumped it. It no longer mattered. One of the reasons I like this photo from yesterday is because it speaks of possibilities.

It looks simple enough. Will is doing something a lot of animals like to do. He’s sitting outside on a picturesque summer day, enjoying the shade and the breeze and the way he feels. But when we first met Will, he didn’t sit. He couldn’t sit. He gets massages. I stretch him out. He gets many warm baths and cold river soaks. He may be deaf and mostly blind but I concentrate on his senses with textures, scents, tastes, and vibrations. Do these help? I like to think it all contributes to his quality of life but I refuse to be absolute in understanding everything.

But what I do know is that he now he sits. Not often and not for long, but it’s so damn good to look at him doing something we all take for granted that was once robbed from him.  Will cannot run and bound through the yard or the forest, or even leap up onto the couch. He has physical limitations. But the again when I’m around a hundred, if I live to be that old, I’ll have them as well. Heck, at only fifty-three I have many.

I can do many things that Will cannot. I take some of them for granted. But here’s something Will and I do have in common. It’s possibility. The gift of now. No matter what happened yesterday, or two years ago, or when we were young, what we have today is what matters most. We always have a choice to elevate the day, as Thoreau once mentioned. I don’t know all the answers to the puzzle of Will. But day by day, through friendship and empathy, we seem to find our way. I teach him, he teaches me, together we learn and grow. He and Atticus are as different as their ears are, but what’s powerful about each of their stories is that it is unique. Not one is more special than the other.  So on this morning, as I sit next to Atticus who is watching me, and Will snores a few feet away, something he’ll do many times throughout the day, I ask one simple question for the three of us knowing that each of us is different yet connected.

What can we unwrap today?  Gifts are everywhere, even if they are wrapped in mystery and challenge, in scars and fear. When I look at Will, I smile because of his quality of life. There are many things he cannot do. But there are so many that he can. He can now trust. He can be happy. He can love. And he can accept love.  So while I do not know everything about Will, what I do know is what I see. It’s called life. And Will’s is a good one because he's made it so.

Thursday’s Musings: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT)  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

We know that keeping our brains challenged and active helps prevent loss of faculties. I try to continue to learn new things and I enjoy games like solitaire. One of my favorites, though is Mr. Giggle 2.  It’s a beat the clock swap three game.  I’ve noticed that even up to a half hour after finishing a game the images are still there if I close my eyes.  I shouldn’t play this before bedtime!  Our scripture gives us something else to fix our eyes upon.  Spending some time each day focusing on Jesus will change our lives. 

Loving God, thank you for giving us your Son.  May we spend some of this day considering him.  In his name we pray. Amen.

Wednesday’s Musings: Respecting Borders

Psalm 1:1-2  CEB The truly happy person doesn’t follow wicked advice, doesn’t stand on the road of sinners, and doesn’t sit with the disrespectful. Instead of doing those things, these persons love the Lord’s Instruction, and they recite God’s Instruction day and night!

Current news is filled with stories of unaccompanied children from Central American countries crossing our borders. It is a huge humanitarian and financial problem for everyone. People are especially concerned for the safety of the children. Reports show that the trip is expensive, dangerous and many children have been physically and sexually abused by their transporters.  Our desire is that foreigners respect our borders. This Psalm talks about borders that God sets for us.  As parents, Joe and I tried to set boundaries for our sons.  Although not always appreciated they were established because we loved them and wanted them to be both happy and safe.  Let’s remember that God’s laws are the same. God sets them because of his great love for us and his desire for our well being.  Each time we step across a boundary set by God, we are risking damage to both our body and soul.

Our Father, thank you for setting boundaries for us.  Day by day please help us to see them and to stay within them. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Tuesday’s Musings: Sharing Your Problems with God USED

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Psalm 15:22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

I like both these scriptures.  They tell us to turn our problems and concerns over to God and God will take care of us.  However, that’s easier said than done sometimes.  How does one do that?  We can certainly tell God we are burdened with worries about this or that.  What is your worry?  But does that make it go away?  Sometimes it might.  Sometimes God may reveal that this is not something worth worrying over. Other times, though we talk to God but find the anxieties as strong as ever.  Perhaps then, the problem is within.  The translations I’ve used for both scriptures uses the word “cast.”  It makes me think of fly fishermen standing in a mountain stream casting for trout.  Their fly is at the end of a line. They cast the fly into the water then skillfully reel it back in.  Maybe that’s what we are doing with our anxieties.  We give them to God but then we reel them back in.  We don’t let them go.
Holy God please hear our pleas for help with our anxieties.  We ask for peace.  We ask that you give us ways in which we may solve our problems and if it is beyond our abilities or control to truly turn them over to you trusting in your loving care.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Monday’s Musings: Dead Branches USED

John 15:1-2  “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.  Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

While Joe and Robert ran in the Peachtree Road Race, I took a 5 ½ mile walk around Hapeville.  I noticed many of my neighbors had pruned large branches off their trees and had them by the road for pick-up.  I saw other trees that were partially dead.  Every time it storms we pick up dead branches in our yard.  I mused that those dead branches could represent areas of our life that are dead and therefore no longer fruitful or useful.  I wondered where it might be good to do some pruning in my life.  In ministry we are taught to look for traditions and programs that no longer bear fruit in the church. 

Dead branches can cause harm to the tree’s healthy branches.  They can sap needed resources.  They can fall against the other branches and rip them from the trunk.  Some branches are alive but grow too long for their thickness. Branches like that become easily broken.  Like those branches we often become overextended or overinvested in something for which we no longer have the resources.  We hold on to things including relationships that are no longer good for us.  This past holiday was about independence.  Today let’s declare independence from dead or straggly branches in our life. If something does not serve us and we do not need to serve it then as the popular song goes, let it go.

Loving God, help us to recognize things that we must let go. Please bless and guide us throughout this day and week. Amen.

This Morning's Pastoral Prayer for Independence Weekend


God of all Nations,

On this Independence weekend we ask your blessings upon those whom we love and hold dear whose names we have lifted up today and those who we lift up silently to you.

We offer praise for this nation; praise that we were born in a country where we are free to worship and move about and live our lives in ways that people of other nations cannot.

Yet today Lord we come to you with confession:  We confess there are many in this nation that have perverted the idea of “Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” our founding fathers desired to include casual sex, addictive drug use, and profane music and entertainment.  We confess there are those who have perverted our Founders’ idea of the right to bear arms to mean the right to have handguns to use to settle arguments with anyone and everyone; to rob and to assault.

We confess that we have become insensitive to the immorality of it all; we are no longer shocked by the profane; the rampart illicit sex, the daily shootings.

Father God we ask you be with those who are standing strong in the face of what would weaken the moral fiber of our country.  That we may restore the original ideals of our Founding Fathers and the women who stood and worked with them.  We ask that we may bring this nation once again to be “One nation under God.”  We ask that you help us preserve and assure true liberty and justice for all.  It is in your Son’s holy name we pray. Amen.

Thursday’s Musings: Singing the Whole Song USED


Thursday’s Musings - Singing the Whole Song Modified and used 2/11/20
Corinthians 13:9-10  For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part;  but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.

Yesterday I had to wait several times in the examining room at the orthopedic surgeon’s office.  I decided to pass the time with a variation of my praise through the alphabet by mentally singing hymns and praise songs through the alphabet.  For example, “Amazing Grace,” “Better is One Day,”  “Good Christian Men Rejoice.”  I realized that for many of the songs that came to mind I only knew the lyrics in part.  It made me think of the scripture I chose for today.  And It also made me think of the angels in heaven praising God around the throne.   Rev. 7:12 NLT - They sang, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever! Amen."  One day we, too will sing this praise and we will know all the words!

Our morning prayer comes from Colossians 3:16.
Heavenly Lord, Please let the message of Christ dwell among us richly as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to You with gratitude in our hearts.

Tuesday’s Musings: In Need of Renewal? USED

Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

I think I may have finally killed the Easter cactus in my office. I forgot to water it.  Last night before I left the church I put it in the sink and drenched it hoping maybe it would come back like the resurrection fern does. This fern grows on trees and can get brown and dry but when after rain it becomes lush and green once more.  Sometimes our lives get dry.  Our spirits lag. We hope for renewal. 

There are many ways to do that.  Tony Bennett sings a favorite song with a suggestion: “When you feel as low as the bottom of a well
Can’t get out of the mood
Do something to perk yourself up
Change your attitude
Give a tug to your tie
Put a crease in your pants

Tuesday’s Musings: In Praise of Moderation


Proverbs 17:27 (NLT)  A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.

Yesterday while at physical therapy I heard my therapist James tell the person next to me how to exercise her leg,  He said, “ You want to move enough to activate but not to irritate.”  I thought that was good advice for many parts of our life including our faith. When we get over enthusiastic about something we may not stop to ask the proper questions.  Is this scripture interpretation correct?  Should I have a second helping of potatoes? Can I really afford this?  Should I pass this juicy gossip along?  It is good to be enthusiastic about life but let’s remember moderation.  We want to activate things that will bring benefits to us but not go overboard and cause irritation.

Holy God, teach us how to balance enthusiasm and moderation.  We ask your guidance through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
