Thursday’s Devotion: Tethered to a Donkey

Matthew 21:5 Say to Daughter Zion, “Look, your king is coming to you, humble and riding on a donkey, and on a colt the donkey’s offspring.”

One of the trainers I worked with when I was showing horses had a donkey.  When one of the horses in training would get uppity the trainer would tie that horse to the donkey and put them out in the pasture for a day.  The long rope allowed the horse and donkey comfort, but because the donkey was more determined, the horse had to go wherever the donkey went.  The trainer described it as humbling the horse. It was very effective.
The Bible has a lot to say about humility.  Proverbs tells us, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2) and in
1 Peter 5:5, “In the same way, I urge you who are younger: accept the authority of the elders. And everyone, clothe yourselves with humility toward each other. God stands against the proud, but he gives favor to the humble.” Have you been uppity recently?  Maybe the antidote is to tie oneself to Christ and follow him around the green pastures of Psalm 23. It won’t hurt but certainly could be effective.  God gives favor to the humble.

Holy God, forgive us our pride. Chastise us when we feel superior to others and help us to all be humble and to seek your way over our own desires. Guide us today; we need your help to stay on the right path.  In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have a great day!
Paige
