Wednesday’s Devotion: Goodbye Cokesbury

Romans 15:4 ESV For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Cokesbury is closing all its retail stores and will now only sell their books and other Christian resources through online or catalog sales.  Saturday Joe and I made the trek to our Cokesbury store to say goodbye and shop the closing sale.  I have emotional ties to that store. The Holy Spirit had spoken to me there, prompting me to buy books that led to studies and significant personal and church change.  I liked being able to pick up books and bibles and to look through them to see if they were what I was looking for.  Sorry, Cokesbury you can’t do that in a catalog and I’m not going to just order a bunch of books to review and send what I don’t want back.  Surely there are other quality Christian bookstores in Atlanta. Joe and I departed with a bag full of books that he and I picked out. I relate this experience to the bible.  Too many Christians rely on representatives like pastors and Sunday school teachers to tell them about the bible instead of holding it in their hands and reading it themselves.  That is the only way to truly know the contents. The Holy Word contains countless treasures if we will but look for them ourselves. Have you read your bible today?

Thank you Lord, for giving us your Word and for all the comfort, healing, inspiration and instruction that it brings us. Please speak to us through your Word today and each day.  Amen.

Blessings,
Paige
